Sojourn

Home is a place where one is supposed to be living permanently; a place that is inviting and comfortable to the individual. The work is inspired by my own struggles growing up as a Black man in a suburban neighborhood that wasn’t excluded from violence and racism. I looked to my friends who could relate to the consequences experienced by the conflict in our environments. Sojourn is a film that examines the complexities of home while following three of my friends through an intimate but subliminal lens.

The film is presented on one screen displaying two separate clips simultaneously, showing various different viewpoints and perspectives of the subjects side by side. This creates contrast and conflict within the visuals on display. Through conflict, urgency is found between the two visuals. This element helps differentiate the issues my friends face but also unites them as well. Within these injustices, I ask the audience this: Would you still consider it home if you experienced racism, transphobia, violence, depression, or poverty in that environment?
